I agree about going to a suit shop. Most will measure you without you having to make a purchase. Everyone is different. If you are slender, you can get away with short ones, but if you have bulk in your arms and shoulder, this will raise the jacket up too much.

I can't honestly say when it happens, but forever one, it comes to a point where you just don't care anymore and no one's words effect you. I reached that point a year ago.
