No matter where you live, no matter how you want to think, people love it when it looks stronger. Having a giant looking body will make the others think that you are stronger. It is in our minds and we cant change it. I'm living in middle east and it is the same where I live. Taller and stronger men get more out of their bodies with less effort. People are born heightist and you and I cant change the fact deep in people's hearts. I personally would equate being short in height with ugliness and unattractiveness to the degree that based on your location and society may be unfavorable.

(Ps. There are plenty of factors could lead in achievements and success beside the height and being ugly doesn't mean failure.)

First, 5' 8" isn't that short. by wearing a pair of cheap elevator shoes he can reach 5' 9" easily. I think the problem here is the smallish frail figure which emphasizes his height.
