I read somewhere that the average height in the colonial days in the U.S. was much shorter than it is today. You can see this with lower doorways in homes from that era. I also remember reading how the a lot of the armor (think knights) during medieval times were for men in the 5'11 range. What I take from that is that height lowers and rises in cycles.
Even though the study makes note that they surveyed native-born Americans, that can mean anything. It could be of ethnic groups that are shorter on average and their parents immigrated here a generation ago. Those second generation people would be considered "native-born".
This is something that definitely takes place. One of my best friends as a kid had his mother leave his dad once she finished her degree and got a new job where she worked around big time lawyers.
All of a sudden, his dad who worked at a factory (for which that little salary helped put her through school) wasn't good enough. His dad was about 5'7.
I really felt bad for Kent. He used to pump out videos regularly on YouTube. His main fault was expressing anger and rage in front of the camera. I hope they eventually scrub all of his videos off of YouTube. If he were to ever get into an argument or situation with a future girlfriend, you can bet they'd use those video against him.
