If you review pop culture in the latter half of the 20th century, you cannot overlook pop duo Sonny & Cher. Tearing up the Billboard Music charts in the 1960s and 1970s, these two were literally everywhere. They had hit songs and two top ten television programs, "The Sonny & Chear Comedy Hour annd "The Sonny & Cher Show". After they disbanded in the late 1970s following their divorce, Cher went on to have a very successful movie career as an actress as well a recording artist with hit songs charting well into the 1990s. She continues to be a well-recognized and idolized personality, famous for her blunt honesty which often lead to on-air verbal spars with television icons such as David Letterman. Sonny Bono on the other hand, went into politics elected to congress as a Republican U.S. Representative from California. Sonny died in 1998 as a result of a Ski accident.

Friends Till The End

What made Sonny and Cher stand out in addition to their talent was their height difference. Sonny Bono was 5'5 and Cher at her peak was about 5'9. Their marriage lasted eleven years (1964-1975) and the two retained a very amicable friendship well beyond their partnership. The two often met up for reunions which drew large crowds on television during the 1980s. Years after Sonny's death, Cher opened up about Sonny to magazine Vanity Fair revealing that she would have never left him "if he didn't have such a tight grip on her during their marriage". He once told her that she knew that one day she would leave him and go on to do great things. She also recanted that he was a "great mentor and great teacher".

Sonny Bono was born  Salvatore Bono and Cher, Cherilyn Sarkisian. The two divorced in 1975. Sonny died in 1998 in a ski accident in Nevada while Cher continues to perform and tour as of 2015.
