This is why television personalities and celebrities tend to be a bit stand-offish with strangers. It's not just becasue of arrogance. You seriously don't know what the motive of people are sometimes.
I wouldn't say that it is a form per se, but they are definitely connected.
Up until the 1960s, the New York Police Department had a height requirement of 5'7.
That changed when women were allowed to join the force.
You can find a New York Times article outlining that here.
This one was a long time coming. I noticed this immediately when it popped up in our annual mandatory harassment training webinar a few weeks ago.
Though it wasn't codified yet, I've seen a few people over the years, mostly men get taken into the dreaded HR office after making jokes at a fat woman's expense. This was never equal across the board though, because I've seen executives and line-employees alike laugh off jokes made at a man's expense.
In the name of equality, this is a win-win.
I remember this story. What made me laugh about this is that wealthy men typically have a "list" of things they're looking for in a partner that they disclose when working with a matchmaker. I work with guys like this in corporate.
What I think made the media railroad him is not so much that he had his "insane" list as Jezebel put it, but that he's 5'4 and had that list. How dare he? "Short men aren't allowed to do that".
If he were the typical TDH media heartthrob type, this wouldn't have been a story, and if it was, they would have been not only celebrating his list, but actively promoting it and following up as well.
