I don't think they're on average really short, I think that's a stereotype. There are short Japanese men and women, but there's also tall Japanese people as well.
As for you fitting in, I can't say for sure. I hear they're very tough on people who don't understand their ways or culture. I know some things shouldn't be done around them, like certain gestures that are accepted here may offend them, so read up on that sort of stuff before you go over there.

Shorter men get paid less, promoted less,and generally, statistically speaking have fewer dating opportunities because of the social stigma that comes with short stature in adult males.
I totally understand, but I have become one with myself. And I know for some it's probably very hard to live with being short, but my life has been great because of it. I know there is still ridicule on me for being short, but I could care less. I've grown to the point where what people say means nothing to me anymore.
I think general baseball caps. I don't much get into the likes of hats though. I like some, but fedoras are a no go for me. It's not "in" anymore and I think the only appropriate hats to wear are winter hats during the winter season. That's just me though.
