Why Men Should Lie About Their Height On Dating Profiles

Lets face it, we have all met heightist women online from the blatant and curt, "Do NOT contact me if you are under 5’ 10” (note the capitalization), to the politer sounding, “strong preference for tall men.” Another category of heightist women you will meet are the kind who will 'apologize’ for your height to her friends and family even though no one mentioned it. For them, not being tall (read: 6 feet and up) is the ultimate deal breaker.

It is a fact that tall men are preferred in the online dating scene and also generally get more action offline. Tallness is a trait women love, though they generally give very ambiguous reasons for this preference. Common reasons include that they feel more "protected" when with a taller guy, or that they want "tall kids". There's also the damsel-in-distress line that we've all heard, "I can’t help who am attracted to". Recent studies have shown that up to 96 percent of women restrict their online dating searches to men taller than themselves. This means that if you state your actual height, nearly half of the women on these platforms will not even view your profile.

A good percentage of women lie about three things - their weight, age and their bust size. According to a survey conducted by Opinion Matters for Golden Goose, women actually lie more than men on their online profiles by close to 10 percent. When surveyed, they said that they hoped that their personalities would cover up the extra pounds, smaller cup sizes and undisclosed years when they finally meet the men they are interested in. Worse, many will post pictures of themselves when they were younger rather than up to date photos.

Riiiggght.... Sure you don't have a clue as to why your age is listed as 10 years younger....

The more attractive the picture, the more likely it was taken quite a while back. There is also the fact that many women in a sense lie about their facial attractiveness and youth by using makeup and hair dye for at least the first couple of dates or months into a relationship. Additionally, another study showed that up to thirty percent of women’s profiles are a collaborative effort with at least one friend contributing and reviewing their profile before it goes live. A lot of unseen effort goes into creating the perfect profile picture including striking poses, using filters, or whatever is necessary to put our "strong, independent and real" woman in the most flattering light.

Surprisingly, a study of women on OKCupid showed that there is no difference between men’s tendency to lie about their height and women’s tendency to lie about the same. It's great to know that we are not the only ones lying about our size. Women, heightist or not exaggerate their height by about 2 inches. Taller women lie and say that they are shorter, while shorter women lie in the opposite direction, all to increase their dating pool. You mean to say that those men who lie about their height are liars and insecure? Why don't you tell us more about this double standard.

According to another study, 65 percent of women think that most men oversell themselves to appear to be more of a catch than they really are. About 35 percent of women confessed that when they are reading through Men’s profiles, they assume that the man has lied and thus moderate their expectations accordingly. So if on your profile, you claim that you're 6’ 2”, even if you are, she is already expecting you to be shorter than that. It’s safe then to say that if she agrees to meet you for an actual date, she is already aware that you might in fact be shorter and has still made a conscious decision to meet you.

What is the harm of lying about your height anyway? Within the first few seconds of meeting you, she will see how tall you are. If she stays for dinner, laughs at your jokes and agrees to plans for a second date, then she has gotten over it and is into you. No harm done. If the inverse is true and she is rude about it, she most likely isn't the first heightist woman you've met and probably won’t be the last. Move on. Likewise, a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center showed that only two thirds of people who date online will actually go on a physical date with the person they meet online. So go figure. There is a considerable possibility that you will never meet that person you've been chatting with physically, even after days of messaging them back and forth. What this means is, you will get to have tons of interesting conversations with amazing women about things you have in common without your height ever being an issue if you make it so you're not filtered out. Friends anyone?

There are sites that won't require you to indicate your height because frankly, they know that when it comes to the things that really matter in life like parenting and loyalty, your height won't matter one bit. Most sites on the other hand require you to list your height, so if you want views and replies, you may have no choice but to lie if you want to get your foot in the door in a society that prizes and puts height before other qualities and character traits in a man (read: tall, then dark and handsome).

If they can manipulate the search filters, why can't you? ;)

As we already know, online dating is a business. Without catering to women's demands, women won't be on, and without women on these sites, men would have no reason to frequent them.

On a brighter note, being a short man and having made it to where you are whether professionally, academically, socially and mentally has surely taken some overcoming. From the occasional oversized guy trying to peacock in the gym at your expense, to snickering broads attempting to let you know "your place", to the 'jokester’ coworker who just won't quit with his "original jokes", you are more resilient and comfortable with yourself than ever, maybe even more so than your taller counterparts. You are certainly not average. You are also more emotionally intelligent due to dealing with adversity, and according studies, you will actually make a better husband and live longer. With these things going for you, you will be more equipped when you meet your match online or in real life. It will take some effort, but as many other successful short men can confirm, it is completely doable.

Here are the facts: The internet is a place where a lot of people pretend to be things they are not. The majority of the time, revealing your true height will result in fewer positive responses if any at all. Over 60 percent of women’s profiles contain lies, diverse lies, from their weight to height and age then of course there is the ultimate touch up; make up. Simply put you are being lied to too.

Straight from the source. Exactly why this should be your height strategy

While I am not telling you to lie about your height, in the grand scheme of things, lying about your height is completely harmless to both parties. In the end you stand to lose nothing by lying about your height. Either you win, or you lose, and if you lose, you don't have anything less than you started with anyway. Just remember, you're not the only one lying.
