He's gay so the necessity for his masculinity to tie in with what society says is masculine isn't there. IMHO it becomes more like short women where his height can be more of an annoyance rather than a deterrent.
It's always something with my height. My build makes up for it but the reactions I get from women have always been negative, even with women who liked me. I think guys a few inches taller than me have less of an obstacle. Honestly anyone under 5'9 is going to have more negative than positive.
Notice the only woman who didn't have a problem was the one asked when standing next to a short dude. Think he said he was 5'5.
As others have pointed out, you lost points waiting for things to go this far. If you're supervising a team, then it is up to you to stand up when workers are uncooperative.
