As expected, taller people are in the cities, but their average height isn't "catching up" to people with Northern European ancestry.

I also remember as far back as high school that some girls chose the guys they went out with based on whether the guy was taller the their dad or not. Especially, if the guy was a lot taller than their dad. This was to have their dads be intimidated by the size of their boyfriends.
This supervisor at my job recently was frustrated at his daughter (who didn't work there) because she dated one of his subordinates who was 6'4. This tall guy played her like a guitar. The supervisor who was about 5'8 only gave him dirty looks. I remember the subordinate telling me the story. He put his arms together and said "what are you going to do"? when describing me the look he gave back to the supervisor.
So I see what you mean. It makes sense.
There is this idea that the men in Hong Kong are much taller than the men in mainland China (particularly those born before 1990) and are on par with men in the West.
I just came back from visiting Hong Kong for business and the men on average seem 2-3" shorter than men in the U.S. Certain things are even designed for the smaller people here. For example, handlebars on Busses and Subways hang much lower.
I recommend a visit for the culture and British connection!
Men who are at least 5'8 are rarely the butt of short jokes and do get taken more seriously in the workplace. Aside from the infrequent "relative" short joke (more like haha, you're not 6 ft as opposed to "you're not a real man" ) and the occasional woman who is like 5'10 not being interested, men 5'8 and up have it way easier than someone say below 5'6.
To those men, I say man the hell up!
