Height and marital outcomes in the Netherlands 1840-1900

What is true now was true then. Being in bottom 20% (according to this study), meant a 56% drop in marital success (80/20 rule). I'd argue that the drop and bottom percentage threshold is even larger today.

You can find the study here.

Man swipes 14,000 times over 4 years and gets 14 matches. Guess why?

This image was posted on the sub-reddit "Data Is Beautiful". The man swiped 14,000 times on dating apps over four years and only received 14 matches. Drum Roll please!..... The man was also 5'3.

"I wonder if that had something to do with it"?

You can find that Reddit post here.

Sharp Decline In American Average Height - Washington Post

Source - Washington Post

The article focuses on native born Americans also, so the usual "because of immigration" may not apply here.

Economist: Online daters less open-minded than their filters suggest

The chart in the article by The Economist allows you to select how each gender filters by race, age and height. I have to say after reading the artice and engaging with the chart that none of the data is surprising and regurgitates what most of us already know, especially as it pertains to height.

One thing that stood out as I shared this with friends is how rigid the shortest of men are when it comes to their height filters. Some of my female collegues tried to use this as a "gotchya", with, "see, shorter men don't want to date taller women and there are lots who would date them". I say "WRONG". Shorter men already know they are not sought after by taller women, so they set their filters accordingly. What say you?

Research notes link between height and divorce

This an older article (about ten years old), but makes a link between height in divorce. In short, taller men marry earlier but are at higher risk for divorce. Shorter men marry later and have more stable marriages.

When people say "Just date Asian women"...

Just Date Asian Women | Asian Women Dating Hierarchy | Short King | Short Kingz

From a 2015 research paper.

Every man know all of this already which is why I laugh when someone says, "just date _____". It literally doesn't matter.

Now while I don't struggle with dating and there are lots of shorter men who do not, we cannot behave that there isn't a hierarchy and that people of all backgrounds aren't influenced by it.

Tall men are more likely to cheat - New York Post

"It’s often said that women look for partners that are tall, dark and handsome.

But research has revealed that if your man is on the tall side, he is more likely to be unfaithful."

You can read the article here. Not that a study was needed to confirm this indecision

Despite What They Tell You, Americans Are NOT Getting Taller

https://priceonomics.com/where-are-the-tallest-people-in-the-world/

Came across this article which pretty much sums up what those who are aware already know. While height in the Eurpoean low countries has been increasing over the last 50-100 years, height here in the U.S.A. has stagnated. No matter what crappy anecdotes your younger colleagues are telling you ("All of the guys in my freshmen classes are 6' on average), Americans now are the same height or in some cases shorter than 50 years ago and no, "immigration is not brining it down".

Interesting facts:

  • The U.S. ranks 40th for height and height has been in steady decline since the 50s. (Graph http://imgur.com/a/PCyMn)
  • Height worldwide stagnated since the 70s. (Graph http://imgur.com/a/DYMmU)
  • Researchers believe that the Dutch have reached the limits of human height
  • Immigrants are NOT bringing American height averages down. White Americans Males have stalled at 5'9.5 (CDC)
  • Canadians are taller than Americans
  • Americans were almost the tallest country in the world in 1900 (117 years ago FYI)

Have humans gotten statistically taller? (Hormones/Diet)

Sounds crazy, but when I go to stores, I usually shop for S/P sizes. The other day I went into a vintage store and medium sizes fit me perfectly - gloves, pants, shirts - you name it. The perfect fit surprised the hell out of me.

This leads me to ask. Were men significantly shorter in the 1910s - 1930s?

A 5cm diff in height is associated with a 9% decrease in suicide risk

From PsychiatryOnline.org

ABSTRACT

Objective: Previous studies have found associations between poor fetal and infant growth and the risk of suicide. The authors’ goal was to investigate the association between height—a measure of childhood growth—and suicide risk.

Method: The authors conducted a record linkage study of the birth, conscription, mortality, family, and census register data of 1,299,177 Swedish men followed from age 18 to a maximum of age 49.

Results: There were 3,075 suicides over an average follow-up period of 15 years. There was a strong inverse association between height and suicide risk. In fully adjusted models, a 5-cm increase in height was associated with a 9% decrease in suicide risk.

Conclusions: The strong inverse association between height and suicide may signify the importance of childhood exposure in the etiology of adult mental disorder or reflect stigmatization or discrimination encountered by short men in their adult lives.

No correlation between a team's height and results

This BBC study is a big one boys, but I wonder if this will promote the idea that society is in general heightist in sports and the professional world overall. This is study done about Football. Could this be extended to all sports? Jose Altuve is the best batter in Baseball at just 5'6. Shouldn't that be telling?

Genetically people prefer partners around their height

This study was done by the University Of Edinburgh and says they can determine with accuracy the height of their long term partners. It also says this desire is genetic. Interesting that according to this research, both women and men prefer partners of similar height. This goes the anecdotal evidence presented by short men and women in forums and social discussion.

Women want taller men more than men want shorter women

Abstract from the Study "Personality And Individual Differences" - June 2013. PDF available here

Physical characteristics, such as height, play an important role in human mate preferences. Satisfaction with one's own height and one's partner height seem likely to be related to these preferences. Using a student sample (N = 650), we show that women are not only more selective, but also more consistent, than men, in their partner height preferences. Women prefer, on average, a larger height difference between themselves and their partner (i.e. males being much taller than themselves) than men do. This effect is even more pronounced when examining satisfaction with actual partner height: women are most satisfied when their partner was 21 cm taller, whereas men are most satisfied when they were 8 cm taller than their partner. Next, using data from our sample and that of a previously published study (N = 52,677), we show that for men, height is more important to the expression of satisfaction with one's own height than it is for women. Furthermore, slightly above average height women and tall men are most satisfied with their heights. We conclude that satisfaction with one's own height is at least partly a consequence of the height preference of the opposite sex and satisfaction with one's partner height.
